An Introduction to Nepali Dhami-Jhankri-Shamanism
The relationship of Nepali shamans with the Primordial Purusha and Prakriti
May 30-31 & June 01, 2025
Nepal is one country where traditional shamanism has been a living tradition as a perennial flow for a long time—it is a way of life for many communities and groups. During this three-day program, participants will actively learn cosmology, the events of the creation of the universe, and the causes of disharmony and malaise from the traditional understanding of the Nepali Jhankri-shaman.
Under the expert guidance of Bhola, participants will embark on a journey of discovery. Through stories, myths, journeys, ceremonies, dance, and group rituals, Bhola will lead you to explore the elements of creation, the three worlds and fourteen levels (Tintri-lok Chaudha Bhuvana) of the Nepali upper and lower spiritual realms.
Participants will learn about the male and female spirits of the Dhyangro drum, a sacred instrument that plays a significant role in shamanic rituals. They will understand the primordial sound and rhythms it produces and how the spirits of Purusha and Prakriti work in unison or the union of the opposites to bring healing and harmony. The Jhankri uses unique rhythms from the Dhyangro drum in his or her work.
The Retreat
During the retreat, Bhola will also guide you in exploring the practical aspects of shamanism.
You will learn about the elements of the shaman’s costume (Jala-mala, Jama-Pagari), the traditional way an altar (Thaan) is prepared and the art of making offerings (Chadaunu). Conventional perspectives on disease and illness will be discussed, and you will have an opportunity to invoke the water deity Jala Devi to create healing water.
Prepare to be transformed during this retreat. A healing mandala (Rekhii) will be designed with cosmic representations, and participants will perform healing rituals of ‘letting go’ and ‘removal’ as Khadga Puja. A spiritual cleansing and dancing ritual, a Shamanic Dance of Transformation (Jhankri-Naach) follows the Khadga Puja, promising a profound shift in your spiritual journey.
To conclude the retreat, Bhola will impart a five-coloured thread (Pancha-Rangi Dhago) blessing of harmony, balance, and joy. This thread symbolizes the unity of the five elements. It is believed to raise the life forces for protection (Siir Uthaunu), a ritual that enhances the participants’ spiritual strength and resilience.
